Enough With The Fucking Zombies (Repost)

Wait wait, let me guess. You’re an independent game designer and you wanna make a smash hit steam game. Your concept: An open world survival game where your primary enemies are zombies, or zombie-like creatures. The game has a crafting system, a combat system that is so ineffective it’s better to just run from enemies, and limited food/medicine/ammo. You are thinking about making it online, or you have some kind of co-op in mind. And your game has a day-night cycle where stronger zombies come out at night.

Every single time I open steam, I see another one of these. Some indie darling zombie game has gone into early access, and promises to be BIGGER and BETTER than the last one that came out. It’s totally gonna be the best one yet and rock your world, it just needs a few months or a few years or maybe just check back in a few decades.

Enough is enough. Saying “zombies are done” is an understatement at this point. They were done by the time Resident Evil came out, they’re so fucking done by now. But more than anything, zombie survival games need to stop. They all look alike. They all play alike. They all promise the same things and go through the same hoops. And every single one gets a big fat banner ad on the steam front page.

And here’s the thing: I once thought the idea was sorta cool. I thought it was a neat idea when Day Z came out, as a mod for Arma 2. I thought the idea of an open-world survival game where bartering and trust were key had merit. But since then we’ve had 10 million fucking zombie survival games come out. If it’s not The War Z/Infestation it’s 7 Days to Die, and if it’s not 7 Days to Die it’s H1Z1, and if it’s not H1Z1 it’s Miscreated. And it’ll be a fucking miracle if The Dead Linger is ever finished.

Please. Developers. Just stop. Stop making zombie games. Stop making zombie survival games. Stop making zombie action games. Stop making fucking zombie MMOs. Just stop. Please.
