When I started Evagaming, the precursor to Skirt Defense Force, it was never meant to be more than a dumping ground for my writings about games and anime. I eventually moved to WordPress to avoid the community and UI of tumblr, and set up my Patreon when I lost my job to help keep myself afloat. Since then, my blog has grown in ways I never thought possible and people have supported me in ways I can never repay. It has been a very meaningful two years for my blog.
It is thus with a heavy heart that I must announce Skirt Defense Force will stop updating by the end of May.
If this seems sudden it’s because it is. I came up with the idea recently and only decided on a definite timeframe a few days ago. Why? Well there are a few reasons. Since starting my job, I’ve found it difficult to update my blog, keep on top of work, and also pursue other interests. This isn’t just due to a lack of time, however, as I’ve also had trouble motivating myself to work on articles.
It took me a while to realize why this was, but to put it plainly, I no longer feel invested in this blog and its subject matter. I started this as an LGBTQ-focused opinion blog about games and anime, and I’ve lost interest in writing about those subjects. In addition, this blog has felt too unfocused, making it difficult to come up with articles that feel “fitting” for it.
At the same time, I’ve recently rekindled my interest in the arts, which I’d suppressed for years by this point. Playing catch-up on my artistic education takes a lot of time and effort, however, and I find that time hard to come by these days. It’s resulted in me feeling stressed and guilty whenever I spend time on my art instead of my writing, however, and the last thing I need right now is more stress on my plate. I’d like to start taking proper art lessons starting in the summer, hence the May end-date.
Does that mean no more writing from me? No, but I will be taking a break for a bit. I have ideas for a new blog, with a more cohesive focus, but I want to take a step back and examine my writing before I do anything with that. My ultimate hope is to develop both my writing and my art, but at the moment I can’t give both the attention they deserve.
That being said, I do intend to keep updating up until the end, and will still post the articles I’m behind on. I understand perfectly if people choose to drop their support over this, but I’ll be keeping my Patreon running and fulfilling my Patreon rewards until the blog shuts down.
Most of all, I want to thank everyone who has supported me and my blog over the years. I know I haven’t been the best at keeping on top of updates, so I’m eternally grateful to those who chose to support me regardless. I hope you continue to enjoy my future projects and endeavors.
These past two years have been a sometimes stressful, but ultimately enjoyable and fulfilling experience. I’m sorry to see it end, but hopefully it’ll signal a new beginning. Thank you all so much for these past two years.
